Ancient Agora

The new town Limenas was built right on the antic town. The old harbor (naval port) and the open harbor (trading port) are used as harbor until today. The ancient Limenas was stretched over the near hills over a small area of the plain. The new town Limenas was built over the old one. The old buildings and relicts were found while an exploring mission in the year 1911. The dig outs let us know, that the island Thassos was already inhabited in the time of 3.500 - 2.600 before Chr. Around the ancient Limenas a 4 km long stone wall was built of marble and stones. We think the first wall was made from the Phoenicians or the Pariers. For safety against intruders the wall was strengthened, and many gates was included. The gates were there to hold the contact to the peoples alive. Later the ancient town Limenas was protected through two walls. In the town there were beautiful buildings made from marble, big altars and nice statues. Outside the walls there was the naval port and the trading port. The naval port, also called the closed port, is used up till today as harbor. The trading harbor beside the naval harbor was destroyed, and only some ruins let us remember on it. In Thassos there was always democracy.
